Dr. Nathan A.Coward Family and Friends

Dr. Nathan “Al” Allen Coward was born in Belton, South Carolina. He was a member of the U.S Army and later went on to graduate from the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina with a B.S in Chemistry. After he got is bachelor’s degree he received his PH.D in Physical Chemistry from the University of Rochester, New York. He was a professor of Chemistry at UW-Superior and eventually retired in 1989. He was known for having high standards for his students and epitomized the phrase “He was tough, but he was fair.” As well as taking great pride in the chemistry department on campus, he was actively involved all over campus, taking part in such organizations as the UWS Academic Affairs Council, UWS Committee for Academic Planning, UWS Admissions Committee, and UWS University Senate.

He was also an active patron of the arts, supporting both the theatre and music departments on campus and singing in the Duluth Symphony Opera Chorus. Dr. Nathan Allen Coward was a man of many interests. He loved to read, he was a poet, and he enjoyed many subjects ranging from cryptography to electronics to computer programming to photography. However, most importantly he is known for his dedication and the pride he had in his students. Al passed away in 1990, and the scholarship was established in 1993 by his wife, Doris, and his family.
