Gus and Marianne Frye

Gus and Marianne Frye established the Gus Frye Scholarship in 1985, and Marianne established the Gus and Marianne Frye Business Administration Scholarship in 2008 in memory of Gus. Gus and Marianne were professors at UW- Superior, with Marianne teaching business education and Gus holding multiple positions.

Gustav W. “Gus” Frye was born in Wascott, Wis. and had been an area resident all of his life. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1938 and enrolled at Superior Teachers College that same year. During World War II, Gus served in the U.S. Army as a wireman, radio operator and scout from 1942-1945. He then returned to Superior Teachers College to complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree in 1949. He earned a master of education degree in 1957 from Wisconsin State College (UW-Superior).

Gus was a teacher and principal in Gordon from 1950-1953, and a teacher and principal in Poplar from 1953-1957. In September of 1957, he was hired as an instructor at Wisconsin State College-Superior. During his time at UW-Superior, he held a few different titles including his promotion to assistant professor in 1966. In 1977, he accepted a half-time appointment with UW-Extension for community-based educational counseling for adults in 11 counties in northwest Wisconsin. He retired from UW-Superior as associate professor emeritus. Gus passed away in 2001 and Marianne passed away in 2010.
