Katz Family

The Katz Family scholarship was established in 1990 by Dr. Al Katz and his family. Dr. Katz began his remarkable career at the University of Wisconsin – Superior in 1966. Revered as a superb classroom teacher, Al lived the values of learning and service as he encouraged and assisted many students down the path of higher education. His gift came in the encouragement and belief he offered to those unable to see their own talents. A man of numerous credentials, talents and interests, his legacy includes building the areas of theatre and speech communication with a PhD in Theatre from the University of Michigan, to post-doctoral work in Speech communication at the University of Minnesota, he helped pioneer and set a high standard for interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching. He was instrumental in developing University Theatre, and also designed and implemented the speech communication program.

During his years of service at Superior, Al served as director of University Theatre, and in 1972, was instrumental in founding the Wisconsin Theatre Association, served as President and was awarded their Life Service Award. Al also played a key role in funding the International Learning Association. He retired from UW-Superior in 2003.
