John S. Lenroot established the Mary Baron Lenroot Scholarship in honor of his wife, Mary. John graduated from Superior Central High School, attended UW-Superior, and graduated from the University of Minneapolis-Minnesota with a degree in Mortuary Science. He and his brother, Robert, established a funeral home in the early 1940s in Iron River, WI. Then, in 1945, John founded the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

John was actively involved in many local organizations including the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the former St. Adalbert’s Catholic Church, St. Michaels Catholic Church in Duluth, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, Oblates of St. Benedict, and the Sierra Club. He was a charter member of the United Commercial Travelers #333, a member of the Douglas County Blood Bank, Exchange Club, Douglas County Handicap Club, American Cancer Society, Douglas County Historical Society, National Funeral Directors Association, and pro-life movements.
